Frequently Asked Questions | Restorations
How long have you been doing restorations?
I began experimenting with restoring/repainting dolls about 4 years ago. I can provide samples of my befores and afters upon request. Just email me (use the link at the top of this page above) and I can send them along.
I want to learn how to restore my own dolls. Can you tell me your secrets on how you do it?
I won't tell you my tricks, but I will tell you that it takes a lot of patience and trial in error. The best piece of advice is invest in quality paint brushes and paints. Once you get situated with what you want to do, practice, practice, and then practice some more.
Do you offer rerooting of a doll's hair?
Sadly, not at this time. This is due to the fact that it is very time consuming. I do offer rerooting of a doll's lashes or reflocking of a Ken doll's hair.
How do I know that I will be happy with the results of your work on my doll?
I understand the importance of making sure that not only am I providing artistry in restoring your doll's nostalgic qualities, but am also providing customer service to you, the owner. I can assure you that I treat each and every doll with attention and care, just as I would my own dolls. If for some reason you would not be 100% satisfied with the finished restoration, and I am not able to fix it, I will give you a full refund. I take pride in my work and, above all, want you to be happy.
One a side note, I sell all of the dolls that I restore as "restored/repainted" dolls. I always note the specific work that had been done to the doll when I list it for sale. There are some who think that repainting a doll is not right since it is no longer technically 'all original' once it has been restored. While I can see the point in that statement, I cannot see keeping a doll that is missing its lips or eyebrows in such played with condition. Some people restore old cars with original parts in keeping with the integrity of that car model/make/year. I also do the same with the dolls I work on. Restoration is certainly open to anyone's interpretation. That said, I think it is important that we understand that anyone can do as they please with their dolls. The only instance in which I believe that restoration should be questioned is when someone purposely sets out to resell a doll as 'original' when it in fact has been repainted/retouched/restored. It is not only a matter of honesty at that point, but moral as well. If you are ever unsure if a doll you have has been restored or tampered with, contact a well known Barbie expert or better yet, keep reference guides close at hand. There are several books that I recommend. Drop me a line and I will be happy to share them with you.
